10 Ways to Gain Confidence

10 Ways to Gain Confidence

We all want to become more confident and feel good about ourselves so we can live our very best life. Most highly successful people are known to be confident. They know the art of gaining confidence and the importance of improving their self confidence in the face of obstacles. How to gain this confidence and joining the league of successful people is not difficult. The key to this self confidence is to be true to yourself and your capabilities. Knowing how to be confident is an important skill and mastering this art will help you succeed in life. Following are tips on how you can gain confidence and improve your self image:

  • Understand your capabilities and strengths: Take time out to think about whom you are, what you believe in and what is important to you. Evaluate your capabilities and strengths. Decide what you want from life.
  • Accept who you are: Have the courage to accept yourself as you really are even though you are not what someone else thinks or wants you to be. Believe in yourself that you are a pretty good person. You have your own talents, skills and abilities that make you extraordinary.
  • Develop a sense of control: When you feel very much in control of yourself and your life, you will feel confident enough to do and say things that match with your values and aspirations. Establish a sense of direction based on your behavior and always aim at objectives.
  • Do something you enjoy: Engage yourself in activities that you enjoy doing or playing like writing or painting. You can also try learning something new that you always wanted to do. Once you master things you enjoy, you will feel competent and capable.
  • Relax: Learning to become more relaxed is very important in life. People who are more relaxed have fewer memory problems and are prepared to face obstacles in life. You can relax by practicing meditation techniques including Tai Chi.
  • Positive people and thoughts: Surround yourself with people who are confident and caring. Wash out negative thoughts from your mind. Negative relationships drain energy from your body and create situations in which you lose your self esteem.
  • Make a list of your accomplishments: Value whatever you achieve in life. An accomplishment however small it is, is still an accomplishment.
  • Be true and honest to yourself: Being true to yourself means knowing exactly what you want and having a plan to achieve it. Self-confidence comes when you know that you have the capacity to get what you want in life.
  • Do not fear failure: It is extremely important to remember that if you predetermine that you are bound to fail, then you will. Instead of being preoccupied with the fear of failure and loss, as most people are, concentrate on opportunity and achievement.
  • Write out your thoughts: Maintain a journal and write down all things you want to do and accomplish. Take notice of day to day achievements and failures and think of possible reasons for them too. When you pen down your achievements and failures, you get into writing the thoughts that affect your self confidence throughout the day.
People are not born with good self-confidence. Most of us have to work at it. Eventually it will develop from your thinking and the things you do daily to make yourself feel good.

Legal Drinking Age Around the World

Legal Drinking Age Around the World
It seems that everyone in the U.S. complains about the legal drinking age being set at 21, using the argument that if you are old enough to fight in a war for your country, you should be able to legally enjoy a beer. Not a bad contention, but it could be worse. Military service could be mandatory, and drinking could be illegal. Go count your blessings. The following map displays the legal drinking age in each country around the world. A few disclaimers:

-In some countries, the age you can legally drink is different than the age you can legally purchase alcohol. Some also distinuish between types of alcohol, the difference typically being around 22% ABV.

-Not all drinking laws are enforced, many countries follow general custom instead.

-Many Middle Eastern countries have a ban on alcohol under Muslim law, though the country permits certain establishments to sell to tourists upon obtaining a proper license.

-Canada's legal drinking age varies by providence, Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec all set the age at 18, the restare 19.

-The legal drinking age in Nepal is 24.

-The legal drinking age in India varies between 18 and 25 from state to state.

21 Ways to Boost Energy while you are in Office

21 Ways to Boost Energy while you are in Office

By R. Morgan Griffin

Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD
Feeling rundown and foggy on the job? Does the prospect of an afternoon’s worth of housework seem unspeakably grim? It’s time for a break to refresh and boost your energy.

Although you may not be able to take the afternoon off, you can surely afford 10 minutes to recharge yourself, no matter how hectic your life might be. And although a 10-minute break might not be quite as reinvigorating as 10 days on a Caribbean beach, it can boost energy and mood.

So how can you do it? How can you use a 10-minute break for something more energizing than aimless web surfing or yet another game of Minesweeper? To find out, WebMD turned to experts from different fields -- therapists, dietitians, and integrative medicine specialists. Here are their 21 tips for quick ways to boost energy.

1. Get some sunshine. If you’re toiling beneath artificial light all day, use your 10 minutes to get some sun. First, getting outside can be refreshing. Second, a few minutes of sunlight has concrete benefits. It helps the body produce vitamin D, which is important for good health. Sun exposure also boosts serotonin levels, which can improve mood and help you sleep better at night.

2.Take the stairs. Going up (and down) stairs for 10 minutes is a great way to get your heart pumping, says Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. If you’re in an office building, she recommends trying the stairwell. Because they’re usually deserted -- everyone uses the elevator -- you might be able to get 10 minutes alone to trot up and down and boost energy.

3. Have a coffee break. It’s no secret that coffee will perk you up. But David Leopold, MD, recommends espresso specifically. “Brewing espresso extracts all of the coffee flavor and also has the strongest antioxidant properties,” says Leopold, director of Integrative Medical Education at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in San Diego. “It also doesn’t break down the volatile oils, meaning that the espresso is less likely to cause adverse effects like GERD.”

4. Do a crossword. When you’re feeling burned out, focusing on a different sort of mental task for a few minutes can help boost energy. Get a collection of crossword puzzles and find a difficulty level that you can usually complete in about 10 minutes. Plenty of Web sites have free crosswords, and some newspapers offer cheap monthly subscriptions for online versions of their puzzles.

5. Stretch yourself. Feeling stiff after sitting at your desk all morning? “Stretching helps fatigued muscles that have been stuck in one position,” says Tanya Edwards, MD, medical director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “It may also increase energy by decreasing muscle discomfort.” If you can, sneak off to the break room. But you can also stretch at your desk without attracting too much attention. A few suggestions. Repeatedly sit down in your chair and stand up without holding the arms. Shrug your shoulders up to your ears and hold them for a few seconds. Hug your body, with your right hand on your left shoulder and your left hand on your right shoulder.

6. Make a smoothie. Beware the smoothie stand: Gerbstadt says that they tend to serve drinks that are packed with sugar. But if you’re at home, take 10 minutes to make yourself one. What’s Gerbstadt’s recipe? 8 ounces of skim milk or soy milk, a bit of fruit, and some crushed ice to thicken it up. She also adds some fiber and a little healthy fat with one or two tablespoons of wheat germ or ground flax seed.

7. Try guided imagery. To boost energy, take a virtual vacation while sitting at your desk. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Then imagine a peaceful place. It could be someplace you’ve been before -- the beach or the mountains. Try to fill it out with detail. What does it smell like? Is there a breeze blowing on your face? Imagine you’re walking along a path; the farther you go, the more relaxed you get. Once you feel fully relaxed, gradually ease yourself back into the present. Count to three and open your eyes.

8. Read a poem. Reading is a great way to get a quick break from your humdrum day. Novels might not be ideal for a quick break though -- working through Moby **** in 10-minute daily installments will take ages. So focus on poetry. Keep a good anthology at your desk. Read one or two and mull them over during your 10-minute break.

9. Walk. “There’s nothing like a brisk walk to give you some energy,” Gerbstadt says. The health benefits really add up too. Experts recommend a minimum of half an hour of exercise a day. So all you need to do is take a few more 10-minute walking breaks and you’re done. As you walk more, you’ll get faster. You can use a pedometer to keep track of your progress.

10. Avoid the vending machine. Although sweets and carbs might give you a temporary energy boost, it won’t last. Choose a snack with some protein, which will give you longer-lasting energy. Just add some peanut butter to that apple or some low-fat cheese to your crackers, Gerbstadt says.

11. Write in a journal. If you’re like a lot of people, you’ve started and abandoned (and restarted and re-abandoned) a diary before. But begin a new one with the intention to write in it only 10 minutes a day. It might feel more doable if you’re not trying to record everything. You might find that keeping a journal – and the self-reflection it requires – gives you a better perspective on your life and job.
Laugh. Does laughing have health benefits? It might, although the evidence isn’t clear yet. Either way, there’s no denying that laughing can make you feel better. So during your 10-minute break, deliberately seek out something that you know will make you laugh -- watching a few clips on YouTube or reading a favorite blog. If you can, involve a friend: Studies show that people laugh more when they’re laughing with others.
Use cold water. The Romans used to invigorate themselves by plunging into the frigidarium, a cold water pool. Without being quite so drastic, you can get a quick energy boost by just splashing cold water on your face in the bathroom.

12. Go for green tea. Good old black tea is fine too, but green tea has some specific benefits, says Leopold. It has the highest levels of antioxidants -- like EGCG -- that might support health, possibly lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and some cancers. It’s also got caffeine, but not too much. So green tea can be a good choice if you find coffee or black tea makes you jittery.

13. Try aromatherapy. Some people believe that the smells of certain essential oils -- like peppermint, lime, and grapefruit -- can boost energy. So take 10 minutes to close your eyes and breathe in the scent from the bottle. Or use a spray to spritz the room. Of course, check with your officemates before you start scenting up the place.

14. Consider a supplement. Sure, there are lots of energy-boosting herbal stimulants out there, but Leopold recommends a different approach. “I like herbs like ashwaganda, panax ginseng, or rhodiola,” he tells WebMD. “They’re not stimulants, but they can help the body deal with stress, which can cause fatigue.” Of course, check with a doctor before you start using a supplement – especially if you have a health condition or take any daily medications.

15. Listen to music. The right music can really change your mood, and doing some prep work can help. Come up with a list of the songs that always seem to psych you up, and then make a mix or playlist of three on your computer or MP3 player. Then you’ve got about 10 minutes worth of invigorating music ready to go when you need it.

16. Have some chocolate. Chocolate is itself a mild stimulant, and it has lots of other possible health benefits too – from boosting memory to lowering cardiovascular risks. Gerbstadt recommends a cup of unsweetened cocoa powder with some artificial sweetener added. “It can satisfy that craving for chocolate without the calories,” she says. Mixed with skim milk and you’ve got some protein too.

17. Unleash some feng shui on your desk. Admittedly, organizing your desk might not sound like an energy booster. But really, working on a surface that’s cluttered with paperwork, sandwich crumbs, and empty coffee cups can really sap your spiritual strength. Taking 10 minutes to organize things now might allow you to work more efficiently and energetically for the rest of the day.

18. Eat breakfast. Too busy to eat breakfast? Baloney. Pouring milk on a high fiber cereal just isn’t that time consuming. Neither is smearing cream cheese on whole wheat bread. The benefits are real. After eight or 10 (or more) hours without food, your body needs fuel to get going. Eating breakfast has long-term benefits too: Studies show that people who skip it have a higher risk of gaining excess weight. So if you’ve arrived at work without breakfast, take 10 minutes out and have it now.

19. Breathe deeply. Deep breathing can relieve stress when you’re feeling burned out. Leopold likes the method developed by integrative medicine expert Andrew Weill, MD. Sit down, keeping your back straight. Inhale through the nose while you count to four. Hold your breath while you count to seven. Then exhale deeply through the mouth, counting to eight. Repeat the cycle.
Of course, some of these suggestions might seem obvious. After all, who hasn’t tried to boost energy with a walk or a cup of coffee?

20 . But the point here is not so much which energy-boosting method you try, but that you try it deliberately as a way to revive yourself. Don’t waste a 10-minute break passively. Use it actively.

“It might sound counterintuitive, but you really want to plan your relaxation,” Gerbstadt says. “That way you can consciously make use of your break time.”

20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday

20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday
If you would like to maximize the benefits of self reflection, I have 20 questions for you. These questions should be reviewed every Sunday morning or sometime during the weekend when you have some quiet time to think. Remember, reflection is the key to progression.

1. What did I learn last week? – If you have trouble answering this question, it’s time for a change. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you should learn something new every week.
2. What was my greatest accomplishment over the past week? – Reflecting on your accomplishments is a healthy way to raise self confidence and contentment. It’s also an effective way to track your progress.
3. Which moment from last week was the most memorable and why? – It may open up your mind to new passions and goals, or simple pastimes worth revisiting.
4. What’s the #1 thing I need to accomplish this week? – Everything else is secondary, and should be treated as such. Nevertheless, this question will also shine light on other noteworthy tasks.
5. What can I do right now to make the week less stressful? – Set reminders in your calendar, get your laundry done, fill the car with gas… organize yourself.
6. What have I struggled with in the past that might also affect the upcoming week? – The idea here is to learn from your struggles and better equip yourself for future encounters.
7. What was last week’s biggest time sink? – Steer clear of this in the future. Setup physical barriers against distractions if you have to.
8. Am I carrying any excess baggage into the week that can be dropped? – Physical clutter, mental clutter… eliminate the unnecessary so the necessary may shine bright.
9. What have I been avoiding that needs to get done? – Pencil in a time to get these things done. For any 2-minute or less tasks, consider scheduling them first thing Monday morning.
10. What opportunities are still on the table? – If it’s still available and you want it, make a concrete plan to go after it this week.
11. Is there anyone I’ve been meaning to talk to? – Regular communication can solve problems before they fester. Always keep an open line of communication to those around you.
12. Is there anyone that deserves a big ‘Thank You’? – Take time each week to thank the people who have helped you. Your kind gesture will not go unnoticed.
13. How can I help someone else this coming week? – The easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want. If you help them, they will remember you when you need help.
14. What are my top 3 goals for the next 3 years? – You’ll never make any progress in life if you don’t setup realistic goals for yourself.
15. Have any of my recent actions moved me closer to my goals? – If the answer is no, something needs to change.
16. What’s the next step for each goal? – Knowing the next step is the key to accomplishing the whole.
17. What am I looking forward to during the upcoming week? – The answer can act as a great source of motivation. If nothing exists, schedule something to look forward to.
18. What are my fears? – Consciously address your fears each week and slowly work on resolving them. It’s all about taking baby steps.
19. What am I most grateful for? – It’s a smart way to keep things in perspective, and something you should never lose sight of.
20. If I knew I only had one week to live, who would I spend my time with? – Another helpful reminder… Life is short. Spend more time with the people you care about.

The Meaning of Life

The Meaning of Life

The search for meaning is a constant theme in our lives and we try to find it in many different ways. I believe that meaning can be found in the way we add to the world. Let me explain.

Step One: Take control

Austrian psychiatrist and survivor of the holocaust Victor Frankl tells us in Man’s Search for Meaning that between stimulus and response there is a gap, and in that gap lies the whole of our experience. Unlike Pavlov’s dogs, we are free to choose our responses to the things that come our way. Many – perhaps most – people go through life on autopilot, reacting in the same habituated ways they have learned over the course of their life, often rehearsing the scripts they developed as children.

In adult life, many of these scripts are maladaptive and only serve to impoverish our experience and damage us and those we love. When we react defensively to a criticism, when we start to get angry because we are stuck in a traffic jam, when we keep on smoking despite knowing how bad it is, we are ignoring the gap and abdicating our freedom.

But the truth is that we are free – we are not robots, we are not like dogs salivating when a bell rings. We are pulling our own strings and when the stimulus comes we can take control, change our response and hence change our life.

Of course, the power of our habits is strong and keeps pulling us back, but the gap is always there, even after a long lifetime of unconscious behavior, and over time we can expand the gap and become more free. In The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, Steven Covey calls this being proactive, the first step towards a life of meaning. In truth, we have always been in control, but we need to realize this before can move on.

Step Two: Adding Value

Once we have seen that we can change our own life and construct our own experience, we are able to orchestrate things so that we experience greater meaning.

But what gives meaning to our lives? Is it money, property, a successful career, a big car, an attractive spouse or partner? I’m sure most people would agree that these things in themselves do not add lasting and profound meaning to us.

Albert Einstein said that ‘only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile,’ and I believe that a life of service to others is what truly brings meaning. I prefer to use the term adding value, since this describes what I mean more accurately.

The term ‘service’ suggests that we have to give up our jobs and money to go help the poor and destitute. I know several people who have done just this, and they have certainly found happiness and peace in their choice of lifestyle. But a life of adding value does not mean abandoning your own needs and desires. It is not the same as sacrifice. Far from it – when we truly add value to the lives of others, we cannot help but receive value ourselves.

Examples of this kind of synergy abound in nature. For example, tree roots are often surrounded by fungal growths that take nutrients from the trees. Having no chloroplasts of their own, the fungi cannot synthesize the precursors of respiration, and so they piggyback on the trees’ ability to do this. In return, the tree gets to use the fungi’s vast subterranean network, extending its own reach and sucking in more nutrients from the soil. The soil, of course, gets this all back – and more – when the tree dies.

Our own body is, perhaps, the ultimate example of synergy in nature, all organs and system working together to create a wonderful entity where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Adding value is the only real way to live a meaningful life. Victor Frankl said that we must detect the meaning in our own lives, and I think what he meant by this was that we need to figure out the best way of adding value.

Step Three: Do What You Love

So the question remains, how can we add value? I believe the answer to this is surprisingly simple.

To quote Steve Jobs in a speech he gave in 2005, ‘Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.’

Through Apple, Steve Jobs has undoubtedly added immense value to the world. He did it by following his heart and has been richly rewarded for it. The same can be said for many famous, successful and wealthy people.

The formula is simple. Find what you love. Do it. Add value. Be a success. Perhaps the first step is the hardest. Do you know what you love? There is little more important in life than finding out.

Finally, some food for thought. In Making a Life, Making a Living, Mark Albion cites a study carried out by Srully Blotnick. The careers of 1,500 business school graduates were tracked from 1969 to 1980 and were split into two groups: group A said they wanted to make money first so they could do what they really wanted later, and group B said they would follow their interests first, regardless of financial considerations. At the end of the study, there were 101 millionaires. All but one came from group B.

How to make effective wax decorations

 WAX DECORATIONS

Once again we are happy to host the talented Mitsy from Artmind this friday as she takes us through making these cute little wax decorations, (a fun little weekend project with the kids for Valentines). And you'll notice at the bottom of this post Mitsy is giving away some she made on her blog later today! Thanks Mitsy! (Also stay tuned as we post the winners of The Poppies later today)!

Here is what you need:

wax (you can use candles and melt them), metal cookie lid, cookie cutters, newspaper, nylon thread, ribbon, wooden sticks, needle, plier, crimp beads, beads & findings.

Make sure that you work safe when working with hot wax. Cover the area that you are working on with newspaper. Put the cookie lid on top of it & heat the wax.

Fill the metal cookie lid with wax.

Let the wax set for a while until it is stiff but still feels warm. That allows you to press cookie cutters into it without the wax cracking. You have to work quick now as the wax cools down fast. Press as many cutters as possible in the lid.

You can then remove the wax around the cutted shapes.

When you push lightly, the shape will come loose.

If it's still warm, you can easily put a needle through the wax figure. Or you can heat the needle in the flame of a candle.

Or put the wooden stick in the cut out wax figure but only halfway.

Or you can push a hole from front to back.

All the left over wax can go back into the pan and you can re-heat it again if you need more figures.

Then the figures are ready to make decorations from. Add a little ribbon to the wax decorations. They will look super in flower pots.

Or make some ornaments to hang in a branch or on a gift. Cut a piece of metal wire.

Fold it double and place a ribbon in between.

Then pull it through the hole you made in the wax decoration.

Pull the double pieces of ribbon through the loop and make a knot at the end.

Tada! :)

Or make a nice garland with beads and findings. First make a loop and close it with a crimpbead.

Press the crimpbead with the plier.

Then start threading beads & findings according to your taste and add the wax decorations in between.

End the vertical garland again with a crimpbead.

Here is another garland with the flowers. First add a loop and then knots, wooden beads and wax flowers.

Here are the results:

Dreaming is one of the most mysterious and interesting experiences in our lives.
But what do we actually know about dreams?
Here are 13 interesting facts about dreams – enjoy

1. You Forget 90% of Your Dreams

Within 5 minutes of waking, half of your dream is forgotten. Within 10, 90% is gone.

2. Blind People also Dream

People who became blind after birth can see images in their dreams. People who are born blind do not see any images, but have dreams equally vivid involving their other senses of sound, smell, touch and emotion.

3. Everybody Dreams

Every human being dreams (except in cases of extreme psychological disorder). If you think, you are not dreaming, you just forget your dreams.

4. In Our Dreams We Only See Faces, That We already Know

Our mind is not inventing faces – in our dreams we see real faces of real people that we have seen during our life but may not know or remember. We have all seen hundreds of thousands of faces throughout our lives, so we have an endless supply of characters for our brain to utilize during our dreams.

5. Not Everybody Dreams in Color

A full 12% of sighted people dream exclusively in black and white. The remaining number dream in full color. Studies from 1915 through to the 1950s maintained that the majority of dreams were in black and white, but these results began to change in the 1960s. Today, only 4.4% of the dreams of under-25 year-olds are in black and white. Recent research has suggested that those changing results may be linked to the switch from black-and-white film and TV to color media.

6. Dreams are Symbolic

If you dream about some particular subject it is not often that the dream is about that. Dreams speak in a deeply symbolic language. Whatever symbol your dream picks on it is most unlikely to be a symbol for itself.

7. Emotions

The most common emotion experienced in dreams is anxiety. Negative emotions are more common than positive ones.

8. You can have four to seven dreams in one night.

On average, you can dream anywhere from one or two hours every night.

9. Animals Dream Too

Studies have been done on many different animals, and they all show the same brain waves during dreaming sleep as humans. Watch a dog sleeping sometime. The paws move like they are running and they make yipping sounds as if they are chasing something in a dream.

10. Body Paralysis

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is a normal stage of sleep characterized by rapid movements of the eyes. REM sleep in adult humans typically occupies 20-25% of total sleep, about 90-120 minutes of a night’s sleep.
During REM sleep the body is paralyzed by a mechanism in the brain in order to prevent the movements which occur in the dream from causing the physical body to move. However, it is possible for this mechanism to be triggered before, during, or after normal sleep while the brain awakens.

11. Dream Incorporation

Our mind interprets the external stimuli that our senses are bombarded with when we are asleep and make them a part of our dreams. This means that sometimes, in our dreams, we hear a sound from reality and incorporate it in a way. For example you may be dreaming that you are in a concert, while your brother is playing a guitar during your sleep.

12. Men and Women Dream Differently

Men tend to dream more about other men. Around 70% of the characters in a man’s dream are other men. On the other hand, a woman’s dream contains almost an equal number of men and women. Aside from that, men generally have more aggressive emotions in their dreams than the female lot.

13. Precognitive Dreams

Results of several surveys across large population sets indicate that between 18% and 38% of people have experienced at least one precognitive dream and 70% have experienced déjà vu. The percentage of persons that believe precognitive dreaming is possible is even higher, ranging from 63% to 98%.
