Instant Mehndi or Henna Tattoo for Modern Women
Mehndi ceremonies are part of weddings and festivities in most Asian countries.  Mehndi tattoo ceremony is usually done a day or 2 before the actual wedding day.  In the Mehndi ceremonies, the women of both clans take turns having their hand and feet painted on.  However, in this modern time, the four day wedding ceremonies would entail so much of your time.  Thus, the use of instant mehndi tattoo is a growing industry to help speed up the laying of the tattoo but continue to celebrate wedding traditions.
Using instant mehndi tattoo will allow you the choices of designs and instantly create that magnificent design you wish to wear in your wedding day.
There are two types of instant mehndi tattoos.
One is the transferable type where you will buy the design pre-printed on a stencil paper and transfer it to your skin with the use of water.
The next instant mehndi tattoo is the mehndi tattoo kit where there is a stencil for you to use as guide and mehndi past and oil to help transfer it to your body.
In both types of instant mehndi tattoo, one need not hire a professional mehndiwallis.  A friend can help you transfer the designs into your hand and feet in no time.  This will give you enough time to celebrate the rest of the evening with the usual song and dances that celebrate the future you face with your groom.
What are the designs available in an instant mehndi tattoo design?
  • Floral tattoos
  • Animal tattoos
  • Body art designs
  • Various shapes for belly tattoo
  • Celtic designs
  • Arm band designs
Other designs on top of this list are likewise available.  As you may have noticed, the designs are not for weddings alone.  This is because tattoos in this generation are not solely for weddings and festivities but likewise a fashionable statement used by young women and men as well.
For weddings, even with the busy schedules of couples marrying, you will see intricate designs of mehndi tattoos adorning their wedding.
Mehndi tattoos are not only for the bride and the groom but likewise for every woman attending the celebration.  You will think that they spent too much time having the tattoos done?  Probably, it is the magic of instant mehndi tattoos transferred in their bodies just a few minutes the night before the actual wedding ceremony.
Instant mehndi tattoo kits are likewise very useful but unlike the transferable counterpart, it takes several hours to create the design you want from the tattoo kit.
Finally, the option of instant mehndi tattoo is good for the time pressed celebrants, however, having a professional mehndiwallis create your hand and feet tattoo before your wedding is always better.   If you have time to wait until your tattoo dries and turn into a darker mark, it will be a sign that you have a good future with your husband.
Mehndi tattoo is a traditional part of a wedding ceremony and using instant mehndi tattoo may not be a clear adherence to the tradition but of course, if you are time pressed, this is always the best option.

Mehndi (Henna) and Tattoos Made Easy

Bridal mehndi and henna tattoos are an art and the people who are professionals in bridal mehndi or body tattooing are artists.  But today the procedure has been made easy and it is possible to buy henna body painting kits with ready-made designs in the form of stencils, ready-made henna paste as well as powder, so that it can be done by anybody who wants to do some mehndi painting for fun.
The henna body painting kits which are easily available in the market are user-friendly, because everything is given in detail.  You can create beautiful temporary tattoos on your body or paint tattoos on somebody else’s body.  All the ingredients come in the kit, just open it, read the instructions, follow them and start painting.
There are about 30 to 40 designs in the kit and the natural henna powder is pre-measured and so is the mixing solution.  There is eucalyptus oil in the kit too.  The applicator with the fine tip has to be used to do the painting just by placing the reusable stencil transfers on the body as you follow the instructions step by step. Even Q-tips and toothpicks are packed neatly in the kit, because they are a henna artist’s must-have tools.
When you buy henna body painting paste, buy a known product from a health food store.  Standard Henna and Earth Henna are safe and completely natural.  Even then it is possible, that some people may be allergic to natural products.  Hence it is recommended to follow some guidelines for your safety.
First of all, the mixing of the henna paste and its application should be according to directions.  If you are taking medications or have some allergies, it is best to consult the doctor before you experiment with the henna paste from the kit.  You can of course test the product on a small area first by applying it on your skin and then leaving it on for at least 2 to 3 hours. There should be no contact with the eyes in any case.
A well-known product like the Earth Henna Body Painting Kit has passed strict quality controls and hence can be used safely.  When you have made a henna paste you can store it in your refrigerator for a period up to 4 weeks.
Pre-mixed henna paste is easy and fun, and it gives a lighter color than henna powder which is used for long lasting and dark henna tattoos.  The designs with the pre-mixed henna last a maximum of 15 days, so that you can practice another design and change your henna design often.  If you are a beginner the paste gives you more flexibility and it is very easy to use.  All you have to do is knead the cone or tube and apply the design through the stencil, or even on your own.
A seasoned henna artist would prefer a darker shade of mehndi, because you are looking for lasting results.  Using henna powder is a better idea for a dark design.  Sometimes you can even mix some natural ingredients with the pre-mixed paste and use a sealer so that the moist henna is kept longer in contact with your skin. With experience you learn to mix your own henna, but even if you are new you can try your hand at mehndi designs with the help of the mehndi kits.

How to Make Your Own Mehndi (Henna) Tattoo

Mehndi or henna tattoo is a sophisticated way to beautifying oneself.  Many women wear mehndi during Eid, Weddings and all other important Muslim events and festivities.  Mehndi designs are usually printed in women's hands, feet, palms, foreheads and shins.  If you want to do your own mehndi tattoo, you can do so.  Some however prefer to have a professional mehndi designer to do their tattoos for its beauty and traditional designs.
Before you decide if you want to make your own mehndi tattoo, it may help to know the mehndi designs that you can do in your body.
Traditional mehndi designs
  • Floral designs similar to Arabic textiles, paintings and carvings
  • Geometrical floral patterns commonly North African styles and shapes
  • Form fine lines with intricate designs.
  • Arabic motifs of flowers, leaves and geometrical shapes
In addition to these designs, wedding mehndi designs often include the name of the bridegroom within the patterns, while some Muslims in Asia use Chinese symbols within the patterns.  Whatever is comfortable with you, you can print it using mehndi.
Now, let us move on.  If you want to make your own mehndi tattoo in your body, you may buy mehndi tattoo kits.
What does the mehndi tattoo kit contain?
  • Stencils
  • Transfer tattoos
  • Bindis
  • Faux body jewelry
  • Design book
This may be a shortcut to this sophisticated body art.
If you are printing it on yourself, here is a tip.  Mehndi designing is an art in itself, to ensure that you will wear it properly; you may need to try it out a couple of times before you decide if you can really do the mehndi design.  Especially, if you are doing your mehndi tattoo for important occasions such as Eid or Wedding, you have to be sure that your mehndi design will look good on you or to anyone you are doing the mehndi tattoo for.
Of course, you may try to paint your own mehndi tattoo if you want.  Some mehndi artists use paintbrush or plastic cones.  Plastic cones are the same tool cake makers’ use in putting icing on the cake.  Some mehndi experts use jacquard bottle, the same material used for silk painting.  Whatever tool is comfortable with you, you can use it in designing your mehndi for your hands and feet.
If you are however uncomfortable doing your own mehndi design, then you may have an artist design it for you days before the event.  This is to ensure that you will look good in the occasion you are attending.

History of Mehndi or Henna

The art of applying henna in hands and feet is known as Mehndi and it is a very old custom and ancient art form of the Asian subcontinent. The propagators were the Mughals. The Mughals taught us all about the history of Mehndi and introduced it to India during 12th century AD. During that period the royal and rich use to decorate themselves with it. The patterns were intricately made by the artists or the beauticians. Indian weddings are incomplete without the Mehndi ceremony .The ritual of Mehndi ceremony is followed in every part of the country where the hands of the bride are adorned with the lovely red color of the Mehndi. On these festive or wedding occasions mostly traditional Indian designs are made on the hands of the bride.
The origin can be from Egypt because it was one of the art forms in Egypt. It has the evidence that it has been found that henna was used to stain the fingers and toes of Pharaohs earlier to mummification. The mummification process took many days and as the Egyptians were diligent in planning their rebirth after their death, they became quite fanatical in the preservation process. The Egyptians believed that body art ensured their recognition into the afterlife and therefore used Mehndi to identify them.
Henna has the power of medicine  was also used as a cosmetic and for it's healing power for ages. The beautiful patterning prevalent in India today has emerged only in the 20th century. India, most of the women from that time in India is depicted with their hands and feet with red stain designs. The art of Mehndi has existed for centuries. No exact place of its origin is identified because of people in different cultures moving through the continents and taking their art forms with them and therefore sharing their art with everyone along the way.
The bushes can be grown in dry and hot conditions. The leaves are processed as a skin conditioner and as a reliever for rashes. The henna used for mehndi comes from a bush which is grown in the Africa and India called Lawsonia Inermis in the Middle East and other hot and dry places. Henna is used for hair dye and as a conditioner. The art of Mehndi is referred to as henna or Mehndi
Mehndi is a substitute for tattooing for people who are too scared to tolerate the poking of a needle. Mehndi will be wonderful for such people. Some people like permanent tattoos and some are comfortable with temporary forms of body art. When you use henna to decorate your body it cools your body too.
Henna patterns will be beautiful and have four different styles.
1. The Middle Eastern style is mostly made up of floral patterns similar to the Arabic paintings.
2. The North African style follows the shape of the hands and feet using floral patterns.
3. The Indian and Pakistani designs include lines patterns and teardrops.
4. The Indonesian and Southern Asian styles were a mix of Middle Eastern and Indian designs using blocks of color on the very tips of their toes and fingers.
This is a short glimpse at the history of Mehndi.

Henna Tattoos: Mehndi Pattern Designs

Henna as it is called in Moslem countries or Mehndi as it is known in India is named in Latin as Lawsonia inermis. This is a plant extensively grown and used in UAE, Africa and India generally for cosmetic purposes as it is considered highly auspicious. Henna is also used as a medicinal plant by Unani and ayurvedic doctors with excellent results.
Henna As A Temporary Body Tattoo
Mention of henna use can be found as long ago as 1600 BC as it was found that there was a custom among Egyptians to have the Pharaoh's hands and hair dyed with henna before mummification. In India and many Arabic countries henna is applied as a body tattoo on the palms and forearm as well as the feet on the occasion of wedding and many other auspicious celebrations such as birthdays, celebration of the completion of the seventh month of pregnancy, etc.
The Mehendi Pattern Designs
There are many ways to create mehendi patterns. Some apply it in bulk creating a big round on the palms and feet. Additionally each finger is coated upto the first bend including the nail with henna. This is mostly seen with the dancers of Indian traditional dances such as Kathak, Oddissi, Kathakali, etc.
During weddings and other similar celebrations, the mehendi is applied in intricate designs drawn with very thin lines with the help of a mehendi cone. These drawings are almost always in the form of symbols through sometimes it has figurines representing weddings and wedding ceremony.
The designs are usually applied to the inside of the palms. However, at weddings the tattooing is extended to the upper hand and it continues all over the forearm. Feet are also decorated in this manner. There are beautiful designs drawn on the feet of the bride that extends until the knee.
The Application Of Mehendi Tattoos And Patterns
The mehendi is prepared in a certain manner, i.e. take a cup of henna leaves and  grind it to a paste, add to it the juice of half a lemon, few drops of eucalyptus oil and the paste of about five cloves. Add to it two tablespoons of coffee. Mix thoroughly and the put it in a butter paper mehendi cone. Make a very, very tiny incision at the end of the cone and use it as you would use a pencil to draw on the hand and legs.
Once applied you would need to keep the designed pattern moistened as long as you can. Use a mixture of sugar and lemon water to keep it from drying. In about six hours it would dry up when you could remove the caked henna. The color will continue to darken overnight unless you put water on the decorated body parts.
Nowadays, young people use henna as a body tattoo on other parts of the body – just as a regular tattoo sometimes mixing temporary dyes.  You would find such tattoos most common around beaches, parties and other similar occasions. These tattoos like the ones applied on the hands and legs would be visible for about two weeks.

There are many, many types of recipes made out of henna, each one aiming to get a darker imprint on the body which would last longer. It is said in India that the love of the husband can be gauge by the color henna leaves on the hands of the bride – the darker it is, the more would he husband love her.
Some Popular Henna Recipes
There are many ways to make henna whether the recipe is used for tattooing or for hair. Here are some very popular versions:
  1. Henna Paste Recipe  No 1 – Take three cups of boiling water, add to it two tablespoon of coffee or black tea and make a decoction (decoction = boil three cups and reduce it to half a cup),  add a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil and the juice of half a lemon and one teaspoon of sugar. Mix carefully with the help of a spoon and leave for minimum six hours. It is best to leave overnight, but if you cannot, you have to set it aside for at least six hours in order to get a deep and beautiful brown-black color.
  2. Henna paste recipe No 2 – take one cop of water and make tea (about four teaspoons of tea) letting it boil until it becomes less than one quarter. Add to it two tablespoons of coffee and sufficient henna to make a thin watery paste. Add to it five to six drops of clove oil, or the paste of five-six cloves. Allow it to cool for about 2-3 hours and then use as you need.
  1. Henna paste recipe No 3 – take two tablespoons of pure henna powder. Take about five slices of dried lemon and boil it with a teaspoon of sugar until it becomes bright red. Allow to cool until warm and mix the henna powder. Let is soak overnight. Add to this paste half a spoon of geranium essential oil and one teaspoon of cajeput essential oil.  In case you find that the paste has become too thick add to it a little water – warm would be best.
  1. Henna paste recipe No 4 – take about three tablespoons of henna powder an mix it with half a spoon of mustard oil; add to the mixture the juice of half a lemon and adjust the consistency by adding water at room temperature. Put the mixture in a cone and you are ready to make designs. This mixture is best used when you need fast supplies as it does not need to be kept overnight.
Which ever recipe you would use, it is good to know that you need a little help if you want to get the best color ever. Take lemon juice and sugar in 1:1 ratio and mix until is totally dissolves. Dip a cotton into this and keep applying on the henna design as soon as it starts drying up.  You need to apply this mixture before the henna dries up or the lines would be lifted up by the cotton ball.  You need to keep applying for about four-five hours at intervals of 10-15 minutes.

The art of applying henna in hands and feet is known as Mehndi and it is a very old custom and ancient art form of India. The propagators were the Mughals. The Mughals brought Mehndi to India during 12th century AD. During that period the royal and rich use to decorate themselves with it. The patterns are done by the artists or the beauticians. Henna / mehndi tattooing is traditionally body decoration that started about 5,000 years ago. It’s supposed to be all natural. Henna / mehndi when applied to the skin provide cooling and astringent action along with protection against many surface fungi and bacteria. Henna can help to lower body temperature and to soothe headaches, fevers, and burning feet and even in cases of hysteria or a violent temper. If the paste of it is applied on nails, the luster of the nails increases and if applied on feet and soles, gives cooling effect to feet.
India is very much in demand for the bridal mehndi also. Mehndi ceremony will be the first of all the customs i.e., one or two days before wedding. Women, girls and children sing song while doing the custom. The art of applying henna in hands and feet is known as Mehendi and it is a very old custom and art form of India. Subcontinent weddings are incomplete without the mehendi ceremony. The mehndi celebration is filled with fun and enjoyment as the family members and friends gathers to celebrate the occasion. Bride’s friends and relatives also draw their hands with beautiful designs of henna paste or mehndi.
The Rajasthani henna / Mehndi tattoo is considered to be one of the best because it leaves the darkest color of red on hands and feet. That is why the henna of Rajasthan is famous. Traditionally, the mothers of the bride and groom first apply the henna on the palms of the bride. Mehndi from the mother symbolizes happiness, prosperity and love which she takes to her new home. The mehendi that comes from the mother-in-law signifies love for her daughter-in-law, welcoming her into their family.
Mehndi tattoo records have been created by North and South Indians for Limca records and world records. Temporary tattoos can be found in almost all departmental stores in the cosmetic section which lasts for 3 days. There are kits that come along with paste and you have to fill in the designs with special tattoo paint. Mehndi / Henna kits are also a temporary form of tattoo. Mehndi or Henna Is A Great Healer

Most people know henna or mehendi or  Lawsonia inermis for two things, i.e. (1) as a hair colorant and conditioner, and (2) as a wedding day (or any auspicious day) temporary body tattoo. Very few know that henna is also a great medicinal plant.
The Healing Properties Of Henna
There are many ailments that henna can help with, though it is generally not used for this purpose as the other two uses are far more popular. However, it is good to know that henna can be of exceptional as a home and herbal remedy:
  1. Burns and scalds – use it for first and second degree burns by applying it in the form of powder or paste to the affected area whereby it decreases pain, reduces fluid loss which is a critical aspect is the burnt area is large and it is germicidal and anti-microbial effect which prevent infection. It has been observed that the henna sticks to the burnt part until it heals which is excellent as it acts as a natural bandage or dressing.
  2. Ulcers and open wounds – When applied on open wounds or ulcers, it relieves pain and heals and nourishes the injured part. This is why it is recommended for use by diabetic patients as it fills in cracks at the heel if any, and heals ulcers that are difficult to cure otherwise.  When used for gargling it cures mouth ulcers, i.e. tongue, lips and cheeks.
  3. Anti-inflammatory properties – when used on abscesses it reduces inflammation as it fight the infection and heals it.  You can apply henna in combination with Roghan-e-Zaitoon to fight scalp boils, as well.
  4. Fights fungal infection – when nails are affected and disfigured by fungal infection, applying henna will help in regaining the normal shape of the nail as the nail luster. The henna needs to be applied in combination with vinegar
  5. Exceptional insect repellant – henna can be used as an insect repellant. Keep a few leaves (well dried) inside your clothes closet to make it insect-proof.
  6. Chicken pox aide – if henna is applied to the soles of the feet of those affected by chicken pox and small pox, there will be no harm done to the eyes by these diseases. Also, the pox dries up faster.
  7. Heals leprosy wounds – soak henna leaves overnight in water and drink the decanted water early morning on empty stomach for 40 days; it will heal leprosy wounds.
  8. Relieves heat headache – the smell of henna flowers can relieve the headache induced by heat.
  9. Fights jaundice – soak henna in water overnight and drink the water in the morning; it fights and cures jaundice.
  10. Cures nose bleeds (epistaxis) – apply henna as powder in the nose when bleeding; it works much better than cauterization because it sticks to the bleeding area until it is healed.  In most cases only one application is sufficient.  Henna can be used safely to stop bleeding from any other part of the body with the same effect. Use it in powder form for this purpose.

In the warm climate of the Middle East, the heena plant, which has the scientific name Lawsonia inernis, grows beautifully. Over the centuries, inhabitants of the countries in the Middle East have learned how to crush the henna leaves, and to thus produce a powder. If that powder is mixed with mehndi oil, it can be applied to the skin.
Why would someone want to put a mixture of oil and powder on the skin? Well, that powder happens to contain chemicals called tannins. Those tannins give the powder from the crushed leaves the ability to stain objects touched by the powder. When mixed with mehndi oil, the powder can stain skin. The skin becomes one of various shades of brown.
The Egyptians used to rub henna and mehndi oil on the fingers of deceased Pharaohs, before beginning the process of mummification. Later, various cultures encouraged the creation of henna/mehdhi tattoos. Each culture had its own unique type of henna/mehndi tattoo.
Arabs chose to put large flowery designs on their hands and feet. Indians preferred to make fine lines in each henna/mehndi tattoo. They painted their hands, forearms, feet and shins with lacy henna/mehndi designs.
As the inhabitants of the Middle East began to trade with Europeans, the stain created by henna powder became familiar to some Europeans. Then as other Europeans traveled to all four corners of the globe, those traveling Europeans, some of  whom had become familiar with the henna/mehndi designs, met Polynesians who wore a darker and more permanent skin design—a tattoo. That meeting paved the way for creation of the henna/mehndi tattoo.
Although the Polynesian-style tattoo last much longer than the henna/mehndi tattoo, not every person wants to have a permanent design on his or her skin. Many people like to have the ability to remove a tattoo, much like a woman can remove make-up. Those people are eager to purchase the henna/mehndi tattoo kits, kits available at various sites on the Internet.
Such kits include stencils, design books, transfer tattoos, bindis and faux body jewelry. They allow a person to put a blue or black tattoo on any part of his or her body. Such a tattoo remains on the skin for one to four weeks.
The makers of the henna/mehndi tattoo have sought to capitalize on the familiarity of hair dyes with henna. In the United States, the FDA has recognized the safety of such hair dyes. The FDA has not, however, given a nod of approval to the selling of henna/mehndi tattoos.
The original skin stains made by the henna/mehndi mixture were either brown, orange brown or reddish brown. Such stains contained only the chemicals in the henna plant, plus the chemicals in mehndi oil. The blue and black tattoos created from the henna/mehndi kits have additional chemicals.
One of those chemicals is coal tar. The scientific name for coal tar is p-phenylenediamine (PPD). The FDA has found that many people are allergic to PPD. That finding has forced the FDA to seek restrictions on the importation of henna/mehndi, skin staining products.

Mehndi ceremony will be the first of all the customs i.e., one or two days before wedding. Women, girls and children sing song while doing the custom. The art of applying henna on the hands and feet is known as Mehndi and it is a very old custom and art form of India. Indian weddings are incomplete without the bridal Mehndi ceremony .The ritual of Mehndi ceremony is followed in every part of the country where the hands of the bride are adorned with the lovely red color of the bridal mehendi. On these festive or wedding occasions mostly traditional Indian designs are made on the hands of the bride.
There are varieties of designs, since the custom is ethnic one. You can choose contemporary designs in Arabic, on hands, ankles and in arms in a stylish way. Now a day’s both men and women draw tattoos instead of mehendi. The four types are classical bridal, star bridal, elegant bridal and royal bridal mehendi. There are so many websites which promote concepts like Mehndi creations, henna designs, Mehndi world etc., to approach artists. Even though bridal Mehndi is a custom in Pakistani marriages, people in San Francisco, San Jose, CA and NY like to have this ceremony before their wedding.
Exquisite patterns are drawn as armlets, bracelets, anklets on the hands and feet. In hands and feet they are drawn not less than 7” from palm and feet. For brides who are pale 10” - 12” are drawn depending on their interest. In this busy system of life people, are now choosing tattoos to fulfill their Mehndi needs because it is a time consuming one. Tattoo is stuck around ankles, arms, back, hands and feet. Mehndi artists take a picture of whatever Mehndi designs they make to display to their clients so that they can have an idea about how their bridal Mehndi will look. They publish them in magazines, in wallpapers to adorn their beauty parlors and also on the net .Women are creating world records in drawing these artistic patterns on the brides and women.
To look pretty on the day of the wedding henna should not be overdone. The beautiful red color is done after washing. The color is prominent depending on the thickness of the epidermis of your skin and on where the design is located. To have a good result leave the henna for eight hours. The longer the paste is kept on, the darker the design will be. The designs stay long when less exposed to water, soap etc. For the wedding day go for easy and complete contemporary bridal Mehndi designs can be made on your hands and feet.  It usually takes many hours to get a good henna stain on your skin, and that stain is not a harmful one. The shade varies according to the quality of the henna powder. Quality henna design will last at least minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 4 weeks. The Mehndi drawn using henna prepared specially comes in beautiful red color and mostly Pakistani brides prefer to match this with their wedding costumes which will be rich red or maroon red dress in golden embroidered work.
